Sister Outlaw Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 6 2009

Good intentions and likable characters aren't enough to salvage Lani T. Montreal's play about gender identity and immigration hassles among a group of Filipino friends in Chicago. Giau Truong and Helen Young's direction for CIRCA/Pintig feels aimless, and on opening night some of the actors still seemed to be struggling with lines (a situation not helped by missed sound cues). Joey (Lovien "Joey" Flores), a butch lesbian and naturalized American citizen, concocts a scheme with her femme best friend Marina (Je Nepomuceno) to avert Marina's deportation by having her marry Joey's brother Jason (Louie Sison). Too much exposition and repetition bog down this portrait of a clash between old-world sexual mores and new-world xenophobia. --Kerry Reid
