Skin | Chicago Reader
Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda, The Secret Life of Bees) stars in this provocative 2008 drama about Sandra Laing, whose case made headlines in the final three decades of South African apartheid. Conceived by white parents but carrying a recessive gene that made her dark-complected, Laing was unaware of being different until she enrolled in a whites-only boarding school, where her appearance so enraged authorities that a medical expert was brought in to reclassify her as “colored.” Sam Neill and Alice Krige play her father and mother, whose love for her is color-blind until the day she falls for a charismatic black merchant (Tony Kgoroge). Anthony Fabian directed; with Ella Ramangwane in a fine performance as the young Sandra. In English and subtitled Zulu. PG-13, 107 min.
