Skinny Dipping The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays. Continues through April 29 2009

Shanna Shrum's new one-woman show gets off to a creaky start. Appearing as a martini-clutching Liza Minnelli impersonator working the Calypso Room at the Best Western in Berwyn, Shrum falls short because she isn't very good at being intentionally bad. The show quickly improves, though, as Shrum begins to channel a series of increasingly complex personalities, including a manic corporate saleswoman, a spoiled suburban teenager, and, most effectively, a dishwasher-repair girl in love with her gay male best friend. Given Shrum's impressively precise and sincere characterizations, it's curious that she retreats to the Liza shtick after every monologue. She should put more trust in the clear-eyed women she's so carefully created. --Leon Hilton
