Sky High

Imagine X-Men as an after-school special and you've got the premise for this buoyant 2005 family comedy where high school is hell even for superheroes. Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston are the Strongholds, superpowered crime busters and parents of a teenage son (Michael Angarano) who tries to live up to the family name at dad's alma mater while desperately waiting for his own powers to sprout. Wisely, more money seems to have been spent on the script than the sets—the story is twisted, goofy, and sweet as it sends up teen flicks and comic-book cliches. Director Mike Mitchell has come a long way from Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo. With Bruce Campbell, Lynda Carter, Dave Foley, and Kevin McDonald. PG, 99 min.
