Slaughter City Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through July 14 2013

Over a century after The Jungle, the meatpacking industry remains one of the most dangerous manufacturing sectors in the country. True, more people die at sawmills—but somehow edging lumber doesn't stir the same depth of political passion. In Naomi Wallace's 1996 play, a caricatured slaughterhouse serves as a backdrop for abstract musings on race, gender, and class. Karen Fort directs a strong cast for Prop Thtr, but their diligent efforts to tease some larger meaning out of two-dimensional characters and stilted conflicts come to naught. Wallace's muddled plot skips from issue to dreary issue, but none of them actually has much to do with the way our sausage gets made. —Keith Griffith
