Sleeping Beauty Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Saturdays. Continues through Aug. 18 2012

Marc Robin's musical adaptation of the classic fairy tale (collected by both Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm), about a princess who falls into an enchanted slumber, is an original work, though it borrows a few elements from the Disney version (three daffy protector fairies, a scary dragon). As in both the original tales and the Disney version, the heroine is pretty passive; the prince who saves her does all the work and is responsible for his (and her) transformation. Still, the story is well told, well acted, and well sung. Jameson Cooper makes a great—and surprising graceful—comic foil/goofy friend to Summer Naomi Smart's elegant princess. And Alex Goodrich pulls off the difficult trick of being both initially hilarious and later heroic as the prince who awakens the princess. —Jack Helbig
