Slowgirl Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 1 2013

Veteran actor William Petersen and newcomer Rae Gray tackle this insubstantial two-hander by young playwright Greg Pierce. Under Randall Arney's direction, Gray plays Becky, a spoiled 17-year-old facing prison because of her role in the death of a mentally disabled classmate (the "slowgirl" of the title). Becky seeks refuge with her reclusive middle-aged uncle Sterling (Petersen) at his secluded home in the Costa Rican jungle. Sterling is himself a fugitive from the moral, if not legal, ramifications of a crime in which he was involved years earlier. Scene by scene, Pierce's script systematically reveals the characters' guilty secrets, but the predictable story line doesn't translate into compelling drama. —Albert Williams
