To the editors:

I found Michael Miner's Feb. 10 article about me and Chicago Times well-written overall but nevertheless deficient on two vital points which I trust you will allow me to put right forthwith.

Firstly, it must be stressed that that report of mine was intended for internal, private use only. Correspondence written for a select few within a business is customarily kept confidential; it is too easily misinterpreted in a more public forum. The selection of quotations from this report reflect Mr. Miner's emphasis, not mine, and leave out explanations for my conclusions.

Secondly, some of your readers might infer that I have rendered a low blow towards an esteemed colleague of Mr. Miner. But this was not my intention; properly understood, I have not presumed to judge Ms. Skelly's capabilities. Rather I have judged the standards by which she was selected, and commented on the essential skills necessary to succeed in the competition for editorial director as it was being conducted before my intercession.

An intercession which came, if I say so myself, just in time. But you may judge for yourself the May/June issue of Chicago Times, the first as Publisher and Editorial Director I will have had at least some influence on.
