Smut New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Image

When: Fridays. Continues through Sept. 18 2015

Each week an ensemble member from the improv troupe Jane Barbe gives a brief overview of a different Harlequin-style novel, with special emphasis on particularly lousy, confusing, or blue sex passages. On the night I attended, Adam Schwartz gave an overview of Under the Lights, a Friday Night Lights copycat that seemingly manages to have less sex than the original. Visual aids and some sight gags won laughs during his presentation, but the ensemble generally had a hard time getting premises off the ground, though bits that stayed closer to the text tended to fare better. The setup may yet prove a reliable formula for solid material. —Dan Jakes
