Snapshots Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 23 2011

Snapshots aspires to be more than just another "best of" musical revue stringing together a bunch of songs from a famous composer's Broadway oeuvre. But the story David Stern spins to frame tunes by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, Wicked) is thin stuff: unhappy wife, on the verge of leaving her workaholic husband, rehashes the past with him. It doesn't help that Schwartz's material is mostly shallow and forgettable. Schwartz is fond of making his point in the first minute of a song--it's all for the best, it's good to be popular, relationships are complicated--and then repeating that point without variation. The performances in Ken Sawyer's staging are strong and energetic overall, with superb star turns from Gene Weygandt and the amazingly versatile Megan Long. --Jack Helbig
