Snoopy!!! The Musical The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through July 26 2009

The 1967 off-Broadway hit You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown managed to translate to the stage much of what made Charles Schulz's Peanuts comic seem fresh and original in the 1960s. This 1982 musical--constructed, as the previous show was, from Schulz's daily strips--reflects the more formulaic, played-out feeling Peanuts developed in the late 70s and early 80s. Like the strip, Snoopy!!! The Musical is entertaining enough, but depends way too much on playing minor variations on the same old ideas. Frank Pullen's Journeymen Theater production offers a cast of likable, high-spirited teenage actors who bring a charming spontaneity to the material. But that doesn't make up for forgettable songs and a poorly organized script that never gets around to telling a story--or even, despite the show's title, settling on a character to highlight. --Jack Helbig
