Snow White & the Huntsman

For this interpretation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, first-time director Rupert Sanders aims for a more sinister tone than we all remember from Walt Disney. The imagery is surprisingly dark for a PG-13 release: the wicked queen (Charlize Theron) sucking the air out of virgins to preserve her own youth, women slashing their faces to protect themselves from her, and strong insinuations of incest (between the queen and her brother) and sexual molestation (perpetrated by the brother upon Snow White). The CGI effects are so slick that they undercut the movie's shock value, and the action moves too quickly to instill a real sense of fear, but this is still visually impressive, with spectacular make-up, costumes, and cinematography. With Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, and a gallery of British character actors (Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Eddie Marsan, Toby Jones) digitally transfigured into dwarves.
