So Close to Paradise | Chicago Reader

So Close to Paradise

Our young hero of sorts is newly arrived in the city of Wuhan, where his casual, almost dismissive mentor becomes his corruptor—or is that the role of a crime boss's mistress and nightclub singer they kidnap, then set up housekeeping with? Or is the young man being corrupted at all? An intriguing lack of resolution in each of this movie's scenes—though not somehow in the movie as a whole—heightens the drama of a sumptuously minimal story. Written by Pang Ming and director Wang Xiaoshuai (The Days, Frozen); with Wang Tong, Shi Yu, and Guo Tao. 90 min.
