Soiree Fantastique Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Mondays-Thursdays, Sundays. Continues through Aug. 12 2010

His card and coin tricks are simple and his patter hokey, but George Millward's avuncular, self-deprecating charm makes this 45-minute show enjoyable. Millward's illusions are pure sleight-of-hand, and he's good enough to pull them off in the intimate confines of Schubas's upstairs lounge--though not so good that there aren't gestures (a slightly awkward shuffle, a subtly fingered lapel) that hint at the method to the magic. Still, the threat of a bungle gives this old-school show stakes--small stakes, sure, but at least as involving in their way as the kind you find in flashy, improbably dangerous feats. --Keith Griffith
