Solo Works Recommended The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thu., April 7 and Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through May 21 2011

"Though he be made of cloth and glue," puppeteer Michael Montenegro says of one of his creations, "his heart beats just the same." And I believe it, too--not just of the manikin in question (a headless but headstrong fellow attached to Montenegro at the hip) but of all the animated inanimates we meet over the course of the ten solo pieces in this Theatre Zarko production. Ingeniously engineered and eerily beautiful, Montenegro's puppets seem not only to live and breathe but to feel and remember. Their finely detailed movements--a tiny ballet dancer leaping through the air, an old man tapping his feet and smoothing the creases in his trousers--achieve the compressed eloquence of poetry. --Zac Thompson
