Something in the Air: New Experimental Video From India

A meditation on radio and electronically mediated sound, Vipin Vijay's Hawamahal (Palace of the Winds) (2003, 58 min.) combines sonic collage with imagery ranging from landscapes to concert footage. Lacking an organizing principle and strewn with undeveloped historical references (to Edison, Welles, etc), the video flirts with obscurity but still imparts an almost tactile appreciation of the communicative and allusive power of sound. Many of the accompanying shorts are trite, but Sumugan Sivanesan's abstract videos include some affecting imagery: the blurs of color set against darkness in COMPOSITION_RGB_2 are inexplicably frightening. Curator Monica Bhasin will attend. 99 min.
