Somewhere in Texas Recommended Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 1 2009

I'd never seen Jeremy Menekseoglu's work before, but I'd heard a lot about it, and I was getting a little disconcerted after watching two of the six short plays in this collection. They were engaging, but so plain. In the first, a girl auditions for a porn movie, and gets mad when she realizes she's not getting paid. In the second, a virginal young couple fumble comically toward sex. Where was the weirdness--the sort of stuff the Reader's Justin Hayford has described as operating "with the surreal logic of a psychotropically enhanced swoon fable"? Well, as it turned out, it was coming. Soon. But not in a hurry. Sly in their simplicity, sneaky in their lack of presumption, these pieces build a world so matter-of-fact that you don't quite register the moment when they turn off the paved road. What starts out looking like nothing more than a few characters' uneasy relationship with sex develops, over the course of the evening, into a very funny, very dry, rather wistful, but full-blown psychosexual nightmare, complete with devil babies. It's the damnedest thing. --Tony Adler
