Somewhere in Time

Amateurish 1980 attempt to re-create the morbidly weepy supernatural love stories of the 40s (The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, A Guy Named Joe, Portrait of Jennie). Obsession with long-dead loves and fantasies of their return made an awful sense in the World War II era, but in a modern context they just seem grotesque and maudlin. Christopher Reeve, as a playwright who travels back in time to meet his lady love, aims for sweet ineffectuality but strikes only an irritating softness and clumsiness. Director Jeannot Szwarc strains hard for spectacular visual effects, though he's barely able to compose a competent close-up. With Jane Seymour, Christopher Plummer, and Teresa Wright; adapted by Richard Matheson from his novel Bid Time Return. 103 min.
