Somm | Chicago Reader

For this first feature, director Jason Wise documents several San Francisco-based wine experts—sommeliers, or "somms" in service industry slang—as they prepare for the Master Sommelier test, which fewer than 200 people have passed since its inception in the early 1970s. The subjects are arrogant, anal retentive, and self-regarding, yet for some reason Wise wants us to identify with them. In the patronizing manner of reality TV, he cuts to a direct address every few minutes so one of the somms can explain how he was feeling in the previous scene.
