Son of Maryam | Chicago Reader

Son of Maryam

A Muslim boy in rural Iran decides the Virgin Mary (“Holy Maryam”) resembles his dead mother and befriends the village's only Catholic priest; when the priest takes ill and asks to see his brother, the boy sets out to find him. Hamid Jebeli directed this quietly poignant Iranian feature; as with the Italian neorealists, he's assured but unobtrusive, letting the remarkably poised and expressive child actors go about their business. Yet his depiction of Christianity being tolerated amid Islam seems overly rosy.
