Sonic Youth, White/Light Recommended All Ages Soundboard

When: Sun., June 28, 7 p.m. 2009

While in Stockholm earlier this year, I noticed a huge billboard advertising an upcoming museum show called Sonic Youth Etc.: Sensational Fix. Now running at the Malmo Konsthall, it’s devoted to the band and its complex network of collaborators and fellow travelers from the art world—and at this point, after nearly three decades, it makes perfect sense to see Sonic Youth as the engine at the heart of a sprawling collective, the mechanism that facilitates the dizzying array of curatorial activities, side projects, and multimedia efforts that occupies most of the band members’ time. On their new album, The Eternal (Matador), they make solid music from familiar materials, reinvestigating and reshuffling the modes that got them where they are today. That approach can hardly be expected to sound radical or innovative anymore, but the record’s nonetheless a fine piece of work. White/Light opens. —Peter Margasak
