Soul One The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays, Saturdays, Sun., April 10 and Sun., April 17. Continues through April 30 2011

Rock superstar Jack Straw treats his bandmates like hired help, pays hookers to help him work out his "progressive" musical arrangements, and overdoses on everything. When he finally seeks help, undergoing past-life regression therapy with a psychiatrist working from a copy of Hypnotism for Dummies, it turns out he was always a self-absorbed asshole: a temperamental Cro-Magnon artiste, a duplicitous Atlantean woodworker, a megalomaniacal Roman playwright, and an amoral outlaw in the Wild West. Travis Hughes's goofy script is heavy on dude-centric humor but light on coherence. With a wildly uneven tone (the psychiatrist is cartoonish, Straw realistic), it's never clear what, if anything, Hughes is trying to satirize. Jesse Stratton's uninspired Clock Productions staging dawdles along for two weary hours. --Justin Hayford
