South Asian Women's Shorts

Of the seven of these nine videos that were available for preview, the best is Keshni Kashyap's two-minute Waxed Poetic, a breezy, MTV-like montage of makeover close-ups that makes the process seem both sensuous and painful. The other six are cliched and disorganized pieces with the look of failed student productions. Kirthi Nath's Yours (2001) portrays her family's move out of their apartment with the usual family snapshots and phone messages on the sound track, never establishing why the viewer should care. Sarina Khan Reddy's The Great Game: A New World Order? (2004) takes on an important subject, but fails to make much sense out of its pastiche of movie clips and images of raging fires and war. 63 min.
