South Pacific The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through Aug. 30 2015

You won't find much in the way of innovation or revision in Light Opera Works' enjoyable though middle-of-the-road take on Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic 1949 musical, set in the Pacific theater during World War II. Choosing between the two poles of the songwriting duo’s work—all-American cornpone and serious themes (in this case, death and racial prejudice)—director-choreographer Rudy Hogenmiller prefers to keep things as corny as Kansas in August. Even so, there’s something moving about the earnestness of Oscar Hammerstein's lyrics, which are perfectly wedded to Richard Rodgers's almost pathologically catchy tunes. It all sounds great in Hogenmiller’s staging, thanks to a full orchestra and some beautiful voices in the cast, particularly the baritone belonging to leading man Larry Adams. —Zac Thompson
