South Pacific New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 26 2012

This Pulitzer Prize-winning 1949 musical received a boldly creative Broadway revival from director Bartlett Sher in 2008. It's offered here in a non-Equity touring version, and most of the performances are unexceptional. But Sher's brilliant staging nevertheless captures the rich essence of Joshua Logan and Oscar Hammerstein's extraordinary book, centered on two white Americans (a Navy nurse from Little Rock and a Marine lieutenant from Philadelphia) stationed on a Pacific island during World War II, who are forced to confront their cultural insularity and racism when they fall in love with locals. Combining passionate romance, bumptious comedy, and moral complexity with the best set of songs Richard Rodgers and Hammerstein ever wrote, South Pacific stands as one of the towering achievements of American drama. —Albert Williams
