Southern Baptist Sissies New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries) Brief Run (Theater)

When: Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through July 1 2013

Despite its campy-sounding title, this play by Del Shores (best known for Sordid Lives) is a serious, sometimes grim study of four gay men struggling to reconcile their homosexuality with their fundamentalist Christian upbringing and its "pray away the gay" message. Shores chronicles the characters' coming of age and interpersonal conflicts, charting their emerging, often guilty sexual urges and romantic feelings. Sideline commentary is provided by a jaded old queen and his straight female drinking companion. Wayne Shaw's well-cast staging for Ludicrous Theatre-Chicago! undermines the script's potential emotional impact with sluggish scene changes, but committed, detailed performances make the show worth seeing. —Albert Williams
