Spamalot | Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

Spamalot Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through March 6 2011

This 2005 musical replaces the anarchic wit of its source material--the 1975 movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail--with a much safer kind of comedy. Where the movie evoked the spirit of Jonathan Swift, critiquing our wretched world and provoking thought and deep laughter, Spamalot feels more like a Ray Cooney farce--sweet, silly, and mindless. Still, packed as it is with old Python bits and songs (plus some newer tunes by John Du Prez and Python Eric Idle), the show is entertaining. Graced with fine comic actors like Sean Allan Krill, Bradley Mott, and Matthew Crowle, Drury Lane's energetic revival radiates talent and joy. --Jack Helbig
