Speaking of . . . : Recent Video by Jacqueline Goss

Jacqueline Goss's four videos make elegant use of graphics and text to demonstrate how cognition varies between individuals and across cultures. The best, How to Fix the World (2004), is based on the counterintuitive (to us) responses of Soviet Asians to SAT-like questions in the 1930s; asked to identify the object that doesn't belong among a hammer, a saw, a hatchet, and a log, they argue for keeping the log because “if you get rid of the log what good will the others do you?” There There Square (2002), which includes a series of hilariously inaccurate maps people draw from memory, investigates the ways maps reveal the subjective biases of their makers. 68 min.
