Special Import The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays. Continues through Dec. 18 2008

Paul Tuner's hour-long lifestyle comedy uses a corner tavern in Albany Park as ground zero for the culture clash between Ray, a cynical, old-school bartender, and Josh, an overachieving copywriter who just bought a condo in the gentrifying neighborhood. You can guess the rest. Ray's Archie Bunker clone growls out street-level truths about what the realtors call "West Ravenswood," while a conciliatory Josh argues that change can be as creative as the jingles he writes for Sears. It's hard to believe any friendship can thrive on these circular arguments, let alone Ray's relentless baiting--but we're supposed to. As directed by the author, Tim Kitzrow and Gabe Kroeten are solid stereotypes, as small as their talk. --Lawrence Bommer
