Spill Recommended The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 19 2015

Accounts of the 2010 Gulf Coast oil spill tend to focus on BP’s negligence or the impact of the disaster on local commerce and the environment. In this documentary-theater piece, however, the primary concern of writer-director Leigh Fondakowski remains the 11 men who lost their lives when the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform exploded on April 20, 2010. Using interviews with their surviving relatives and coworkers as well as engineers and other experts, Fondakowski and her sensitive cast supply a detailed and gripping re-creation of events leading up to and including the blast. Though the second act, dealing with the cleanup, doesn’t have as clear a narrative through line, TimeLine Theatre Company's production is animated by a powerful sense of outrage and sorrow. —Zac Thompson
