Spindrift, Velcro Lewis & His 100 Proof Band, Press Gang Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Soundboard

When: Sun., Sept. 14, 9:30 p.m. 2008

Imagine Spindrift as the aesthetic offspring of cowpunk and steampunk, that subgenre of sci-fi that gets futuristic with Victorian technology. The posse, which includes personnel from the Brian Jonestown Massacre, dresses in gothic spaghetti-western style and has made a full-length movie to match—last year’s The Legend of God’s Gun is an old-west melodrama starring band members as archetypal characters like the Bad Hombre, the Murder Victim, and the Gunslinging Preacher. In November they’ll follow up the film’s soundtrack with The West, an album of new music, and from what I’ve heard the psychedelic guitar of bandleader Kirpatrick Thomas is the main attraction: lyrical and eerie and utterly mesmerizing, it circles patiently with the grace of a vulture. —Monica Kendrick
