Spur of the Moment

Watching David Appel move is like listening to someone speak a language close to English but not English, straining to recognize the occasional word--maybe--and to grasp a meaning that's just beyond mind's reach. As this self-described movement artist from Philadelphia improvises, he seems to be miming gestures from a parallel world: is he a street fighter begging us to come and get him, a ballerina adjusting her toe shoes, some schlemiel blowing his nose on his sleeve? Way more quickly than you can decide, he's on to something else, as vaguely familiar gestures pop out and disappear or are repeated until they evolve into a different dimension entirely. Elfin, lugubrious, more fluid than thought, Appel onstage is nobody's dancer but his own, unself-consciously sending us news flashes from Appel-land. He'll dance alone--not with others, the way previous concerts in the monthlong "Spur of the Moment" improv series have been arranged--Friday and Saturday at 8 at Link's Hall, 3435 N. Sheffield; $8. Part of his Link's Hall residency will be a roundtable discussion of improvisation, to be followed by a music and movement jam, Sunday from 11 AM to 2 PM; free. Call 773-281-0824 for tickets and information.
