When: Sun., July 13, 12 p.m. 2014

The Square Roots festival, spearheaded by the Old Town School of Folk Music in Lincoln Square, presents three days of diverse pop, folk, roots, and world music on five stages—three inside the Old Town School (Saturday and Sunday only) and two outdoors. Plus it sweetens the lineup with tons of good beer and cider—more than three dozen varieties from 15 mostly midwestern craft breweries, including local newcomers Ale Syndicate and Temperance. On Friday, New Zealand singer-songwriter Liam Finn headlines the South Stage (Lincoln and Montrose, while Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys and Mauritanian singer Noura Mint Seymali (see Soundboard) fire up a global dance party on the North Stage (4500 N. Lincoln). On Saturday, Seattle folk-pop group Ivan & Alyosha headlines the North Stage, after sets from Joe Driscoll & Sekou Kouyate, the Ye-Ye’s, Jazzettes, and others; the South Stage lineup includes Fatbook, Saintseneca, and Sons of the Never Wrong. Among the highlights of Sunday’s roster are Caught a Ghost, Moon Hooch, and Cuban son ensemble Conjunto Chappottín y Sus Estrellas on the South Stage, plus ragged roots rocker Bobby Bare Jr., African package tour Wake Up Madagascar!, and Deanna Devore on the North Stage. On Saturday and Sunday the Old Town School of Folk Music opens up Maurer Hall, Szold Hall, and its east lobby for musical performances, jam sessions, drum circles, capoeira classes, dance workshops, open mikes, and lots more. Also on Saturday and Sunday, the amazing Swing Set Drum Kit (built by artist Dave Ford) will be set up near Lincoln and Sunnyside from noon till 7 PM. And did I mention that there’s going to be really good beer too? —Luca Cimarusti
