St. Louis Blues

An early sound short (1929) featuring the only filmed performance by blues legend Bessie Smith, who blows everybody else off the screen. Despite the racial stereotypes, this was directed by the gifted Dudley Murphy (who made the even better Black and Tan with Duke Ellington the same year). W.C. Handy, who wrote the title song, worked on script and served as musical director.
