Stand Up Guys

Rated R 94 minutes 2013

Alternating between gritty crime drama and buddy comedy, the latest directorial effort from actor Fisher Stevens stars Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Alan Arkin as a trio of retired mobsters who relive their glory days over the course of a rowdy evening. Thematic inconsistencies abound as Stevens aims for a tone somewhere between Grumpy Old Men, The Hangover, and Goodfellas; he might have pulled it off had his three hard guys put forth the effort. Pacino is the worst offender, sleepwalking through the trite material (a drawn-out Viagra joke lasts 20 arduous minutes), though Walken and Arkin deliver little more than self-parody. Lucy Punch and Mark Margolis, both interesting and proven character actors, are underused.
