Stardust | Chicago Reader

Michael Apted's 1974 composite portrait of a British rock star—from obscurity to fame to pop deification—captures most of the surface sensations of the cult culture of the 60s, even if it does seem a bit hollow in retrospect. David Essex is credible as the Paul McCartney-Mick Jagger-Jim Morrison-Janis Joplin-Bob Dylan surrogate; Larry Hagman is just as credible as the archetypal American conglomerate builder who packages and markets him; but Adam Faith is the real surprise, giving a detailed, compelling performance as the enigmatic road manager. A shallow but slick film. 111 min.
