Starstruck | Chicago Reader

Gillian Armstrong's rock musical is slick and energetic enough to be disappointing for its lack of follow-through; the rhythms and situations build very nicely, but the film ends without bringing them to the final burst of fully resolved fantasy that makes a great musical. The format is the familiar Rooney-Garland “let's put on a show in the old barn,” transposed to the (pseudo-) punk scene of Sydney, Australia, where an adolescent hustler (Ross O'Donovan) and his singing cousin (Jo Kennedy) are trying to crack the big time. Armstrong (My Brilliant Career) uses bright, clean, comic-book compositions; they please the eye and then evaporate, but they're more than adequate for an evening's entertainment.
