Restaurant Details

It's surprising how few decent, affordable lunch places there are in River North. Many Reader staffers wind up ordering from Star of Siam downstairs by default; the neighborhood's sandwich options are limited to chains (Subway, Jimmy John's, Potbelly) or pricier places like the Cafe at Nordstrom's. So the office rejoiced at the news that State Street Pizza Company was opening in the former Foodlife just down the street, promising New York-style slices. But that was before any of us had actually tried it. These firm wedges bear no resemblance to true, fold-it-in-half New York 'za, which is a pity. It's quick and affordable--a slice and drink is $5.56--but it's also kind of cardboardy. In addition to standards like a glistening pepperoni pie, there are specials like the It's For My Girlfriend: spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, california goat cheese & mozzarella on whole-wheat crust. There are also breakfast slices available with scrambled eggs and bacon and/or sausage, flatbreads, and salads, prepackaged despite boasting ingredients like Maytag blue cheese.
