Dear Letters:

$54 million dollars given to Loyola University [The Works, July 7] is an outrage. Loyola is a tax-exempt, religious institution. More importantly, it is a violation of Article X, Section 3, of the constitution of the state of Illinois. The article states, clearly, that "neither the General Assembly nor any county, city, town, township, school district, or other public corporation, shall ever make any appropriation or pay from any public fund whatever, anything in aid of any church . . . or to help support or sustain any school, academy, seminary, college, university . . . controlled by any church."

Fellow Chicagoans, our public schools are in desperate need, the Chicago Board of Education has cut $26 million from the special education budget, we are faced with yet another property tax increase, another CTA crisis is looming--to name but a few of our woes, including the $12 million in "earmarks" given to pet projects of the governor and legislature recently. Loyola is probably also exempt from property taxes.

Fifty-four million dollars given to Loyola University, $8 million sneaked through recently with no explanation, is an outrage and is in violation of Article X of our state constitution. This must be stopped. Loyola should raise its own money to renovate its buildings. The same principle applies to Northwestern and DePaul universities.
