Static: A Headphones Tour Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through May 30 2009

Sansculottes Theater Company's audio walking tour is a good-natured performance experiment that needs more conceptual rigor. Fitted with iPod Shuffles, small groups progress from room to room through Edgewater's Berger mansion, listening to a pseudo-documentary about Walt and Milly Burke--reclusive, compulsive hoarders who've gone missing. Each room holds an interactive installation allowing audiences to act out some of the couple's compulsions: transcribing fragmentary texts into composition notebooks, folding and unfolding laundry, sorting buttons into categories like "ugly," "nighttime," and "shy." The hour-long exercise holds a number of delicate, poetic revelations, but too often creator Tom Horan and director Libby Ford settle for cryptic rather than resonant. Ideas dissipate when they might develop. --Justin Hayford
