Stefano Battaglia All Ages Recommended Soundboard Image

When: Sat., May 30, 7 p.m. 2015

Over the past couple decades, Italian pianist Stefano Battaglia has followed his uncommon curiosity into collaborations with a wide variety of musicians, not just from jazz’s mainstream but also from its periphery. But lately he seems to have found a sweet spot in a trio with bassist Salvatore Maiore and drummer Roberto Dani. They’ve been working together for more than ten years, developing a slow-moving, delicately cinematic sound. On their 2013 album, Songways (ECM), Battaglia unspools rhapsodic melodies with a crystalline touch and luxuriant patience; meanwhile Maiore provides a lush harmonic backbone, and Dani uses his cymbals to play dramatic, pinging accents and richly colorful bowed tones. The music’s introspective beauty owes much to the classical tradition, but its improvisational impulse comes from jazz. This is the trio’s Chicago debut. —Peter Margasak
