Steve Hauschildt, Alex Barnett, Ross Kelly (DJ set) Recommended Soundboard

When: Fri., April 13, 9 p.m. 2012

Steve Hauschildt is one-third of Cleveland experimental trio Emeralds, and to judge by his recent solo album, Tragedy & Geometry (Kranky), he's largely responsible for the group's preoccupation with 80s digitalia—he seems to be going for a kind of minimalist Tangerine Dream sound, similar to the one that shows up in a lot of Emeralds' music. He lards his tracks with swirling synthetic arpeggios and almost new agey washes of neon color, and though a handful of pieces use retro-sounding electronic drums, most derive their rhythmic feel from pulsing tones, with pointillist melodies slowly emerging from a bleepy matrix. Patterns constantly reshape themselves, like the sonic equivalent of a screen saver—I don't think it's a coincidence that the album's centerpiece is called "Music for a Moiré Pattern." —Peter Margasak Alex Barnett and Ross Kelly (DJ set) open.
