Straight Camp The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays. Continues through April 11 2013

After his parents catch him kissing a boy, teenage musical-theater geek Whit Whitaker is shipped off to Mount Saint Cleanliness, a pray-away-the-gay facility in the "land of God and carbohydrates" (i.e., Texas). The place is run by a flamboyant despot named Pastor Father, who lords it over a group of sweet outcasts, including an excommunicated Boy Scout, an adenoidal lesbian with a thing for Christina Ricci, and a straight kid whose parents thought they were sending him to space camp. In addition to playing Whit in this new musical comedy, Rob Anderson contributed the book and the direction—both of which are pretty sloppy. But it's still a fun evening, thanks to Mike Malarkey's catchy score and a cast of likable goofballs. —Zac Thompson
