A graceful semiautobiographical debut feature (2000) by Iranian-American filmmaker Ramin Bahrani. Having recently graduated from college in the U.S. and curious about the land of his forebears, Kaveh (Bahrani) travels to Iran for the first time in search of his late father's village. On a winding mountain road in the south, he hitches a ride with a young truck driver who serves as his guide, at first for money and then out of friendship. While discovering his cultural heritage, Kaveh learns about the murder of his grandfather, the event that spurred his father to emigrate and secretly blighted his life. But the camaraderie between Kaveh and the driver, who initially distrust one another, lies at the warm heart of this film. In Farsi with subtitles.
