Based on a stage play by Jesus Gonzalez-Davila, this 2001 Mexican feature struck a nerve with its unflinching look at homeless kids in Mexico City. Luis Fernando Peña dominates the film as a teenager who recklessly steals from a vicious, drug-dealing cop, then foolishly hangs around town in hopes of meeting his long-lost father. The grainy imagery and desaturated color underscore the movie's bleakness, and the mixed cast of professionals and amateurs is generally compelling. But the foreboding and brutality that permeate the story make for a dreary viewing experience. Gerardo Tort directed. In Spanish with subtitles. 84 min.
