Striking 12 The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries) Brief Run (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Jan. 8 2011

Four talented, likable instrumentalist-singers perform a slew of interchangeable lite-rock anthems and pop numbers in this quasi-musical by Brendan Milburn, Rachel Sheinkin, and Valerie Vigoda. Concept-heavy yet insubstantial, the show mashes up "The Little Match Girl"--Hans Christian Andersen's bizarre story about a young peddler who hallucinates while freezing to death on a city sidewalk one New Year's Eve--with the tale of a New Year's Eve flirtation between a reclusive office drone and a door-to-door lightbulb saleswoman. Loaded with metatheatrical patter--actors evaluate one another's performances, question some of the show's more puzzling moments--Lara Filip’s 70-minute staging vacillates between cute and twee. Still, cast chemistry provides charm and warmth the material generally lacks. --Justin Hayford
