Stubby | Chicago Reader

A missed goal. Bo Widerberg?s 1974 comic fantasy, about a six-year-old boy who comes to anchor Sweden's national soccer team, sets out to satirize commercial exploitation, media frenzy, and the welfare state but ultimately degenerates into a tedious series of improbable soccer matches. Nearly everyone treats the boy as if he were a perfectly normal adult, a conceit so odd that it blunts the humor. The only funny thing in this film is the men's haircuts.
