Stuck in Third Grade The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays. Continues through Oct. 6 2011

Twenty-three-year-old Daniel Shar isn't shy on the subject of his virginity. He's never been able to close a deal with a woman, he says, because impossible standards, crippling awkwardness, and a "resume that could double as a suicide note" have kept him in a state of arrested development, pining over his grade-school crush. A combination of vulnerability and steady pacing help redeem Shar's kind-of-creepy premise. Bits like an improvised, onstage date and an audience Q&A come across as good-natured and endearing. But the autobiographical material too often turns bitter. Verbatim readings of Craigslist exchanges tip the tone from lovable self-deprecation to unflattering self-obsession. --Dan Jakes
