Subdivision The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays. Continues through Aug. 25 2010

If there's potential in Rubin Carbajal's play about two sons torn by the absence--and occasional reappearance--of their hard-drinking braggart of a father, it's hard to find in this shambling production. Kara Karstedt's direction flattens most of the action, and Carbajal doesn't have a handle on how to make the characters' desires believable, which means that many of the plot twists strain credulity. Gerardo Posadas has a lovely, understated turn as the younger brother, and Ben Gettinger nails a few comic-relief bits as the stoner friend of the elder one--an interlude in which he devises a tragic tale guaranteed to seduce a sensitive teenage girl is a highlight--but overall, Subdivision remains stuck in a dramatic cul-de-sac. --Kerry Reid
