Suds

Mary Pickford discarded her famous golden curls to play a ratty London washerwoman in this broad, sentimental, but highly entertaining comedy (1920). Scorned by the other laundresses, she dreams of the swell who dropped off a shirt eight months earlier and never collected it; her only real friend is the laundry's aging dray horse, which used to be a show animal and still strikes poses from force of habit. Pickford's idea of comedy is to mug like crazy, but her evident delight at getting to play such a scuzzy little thing is infectious. Jack Dillon directed. 63 min.
